What you see – MetroMela visited the 12,000 square feet store of Crossword at ICCTradeTowers on Senapati Bapat Road. Crossword puzzles are associated with fun and learning and this lifestyle bookstore intends to recreate the same value. That’s why the name.
Crossword’s first level mainly has stationery and books. The second level stocks CDs and DVDs. The interiors are well-lit and extremely conducive for browsing because of the small stools thoughtfully kept near every section. There are even inspirational sayings on the walls that motivate you to indulge in literature.
What you get – As soon as you enter, on the right hand side is the popular section where they have top 10 collections. In fiction, they have a huge collection of Indian writers, thrillers, mysteries, horror, romance and classics. In non-fiction they have interesting biographies, books on architecture (of different eras), interiors, travelogues, self help books, cooking, health and wellness, sports and hobbies, computers and management. You can also find regional books in Marathi and Gujarati here. They even have a magazine section.
Films are intrinsic to Pune and we were delighted to see even a cinema section. Books on Shah Rukh Khan by different authors seemed to rule the roost along with the much talked about book on Nargis and Sunil Dutt written by the daughters. General books on script writing and film making are there too.
In the children’s section the interiors are much livelier and so are the books. The carpets have octopus and starfish imprinted on them. The comics section here comprises Asterix, Tintin, Amar Chitra Katha etc. They also have a separate mythological section with Ramayana, Mahabharata and many more. Classics like Shakespeare, Frankenstein and noted children’s series of Enid Blyton, Nancy Drew, Famous Five, Goosebumps and science fiction books are popular buys here.
Reference books on history, geography, dictionaries, language books, mathematics, science and related kits are available in the reference section. There is a toys’ section too where an array of soft toys, Funskool kits, board games, Barbie dolls, puzzles, cars, robots etc can be found. Adjacent to it is the stationery section which has goodies available for children and adults. They have CDs available here as well including those on golf and football.
On the second level is the music and movies section. There are VCDs and DVDs of English and Hindi movies available with some regional ones too. They have segregated the latest releases and popular picks of the store. We noticed some classics, some run-of-the-mills and some rare finds too. In music, along with the Bollywood compilation, Indi-pop, global music, children’s songs, devotional songs and a fair collection of ghazals are available.
Our verdict – Every level has an enquiry section that helps you find books or CDs in case you are lost. The café, Brio attached to it adds to the experience. You can become a member here for Rs. 150 and can redeem points, get discounts etc for loyalty. On an average, once in three weeks they also have an interaction program with various authors. Home delivery option is also there and you can even buy and present gift vouchers here. Pay and park facility is available.
